Ingrown Toenail, The Most Common Foot Injury In Golf

In golf there are usually less traumatic foot injuries and overuse foot injuries than in other sports. Believe it or not,the most common injury in golf Is a painful ingrown toenail. Golf players often pronate, turning their feet, or rolling their feet in, when they swing; and their nails get injured.

There are several causes of an ingrown toenail. Among them are incorrect cutting of the toenail, trauma, foot deformities such as bunions which can cause the big toe to rotate on its side. The rotation pushes the toe tissue up around the nail, forcing the nail edge into the flesh. After a few weeks, or months, when the injury is forgotten, an ingrown toenail might develop. As continuous pressure against the soft tissue progresses, there is a decrease in blood supply to the area under the nail border and that creates tissue breakdown, leading to bacterial growth and an infection.

Treatment is directed to removing the ingrown part of the nail. This is the only way to cure the infection.

If someone suffers from repetitive ingrown toenails, the affected nail border can be removed permanently. If you suffer from an infected ingrown toenail, or even a painful ingrown toenail before it becomes infected, one of our expert podiatrists at Advanced Podiatry of Manhasset, Huntington, Plainview, and Maspeth are here to help you.
