Do you have sweaty feet- also known as hyperhidrosis? People with hyperhidrosis have sweat glands that activate sooner and remain active for longer periods of time than others. They produce significantly more sweat than what would typically be expected, and they do it more often than people who do not have the condition. Hyperhidrosis can appear anywhere that the body has sweat glands; usually in the armpits, the face/head, or the palms of the hands. When it appears on the feet, it is known as plantar hyperhidrosis. When the feet are regularly damp and sweaty, other problematic situations can occur- including nail fungus, athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), and unpleasant foot odor from bacteria.
Everyone with hyperhidrosis experiences different triggers, including hot weather, exercise, stress, and/or illness. Shoes and socks made of non-breathable fabrics can also be a factor.
What steps can you take to keep your sweaty feet dry and odor-free? Here are some tips:
Practice good foot hygiene. Clean and dry your feet post shower/bathing.
Use foot powder or cornstarch to absorb sweat and moisture.
Apply an antiperspirant to your feet. Ask about the roll-on we carry in the office!
Always wear clean, dry socks. Change socks mid day or after activities if needed.
When possible, choose open shoes such as sandals, and those made of fabrics that allow feet to “breathe”.
Are you suffering with hyperhidrosis? You are not alone, please call one of our offices and make an appointment to be evaluated.
