It's Marathon Season Again

The New York City marathon is this Sunday. Without fail, ever year at this time we see an influx of new patients with running and training related injuries. One of the most common issues we encounter is new marathon hopefuls doing the most extensive training they have ever done. They are often unprepared, and unaware of the risks of such diligent and demanding activity.

If you are planning to start a running or training regime take a few simple steps to avoid debilitating problems.

1: Make sure you have a good supportive, accommodative sneaker designed for your chosen activity and training surface. Feel free to stop in for an evaluation or advice before you buy.

2: Consider a custom orthotic insert for your shoe gear. Orthotics can help provide alignment, support, weight distribution and padding.

3: Stretching, stretching, stretching. Before and after activity is crucial. Night splints or dorsiflexory stretching splints are a great way to do this as well.

4: Start gradually and develop a plan. Take your time. Build your endurance and get accustomed to your new activity.

5: Don't ignore pain. Pain is not normal. If you have an issue consult your podiatrist. There is no reason to suffer!

Happy running!
