Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition in which a nerve known as the posterior tibial nerve compresses while traveling through the tarsal tunnel around the ankle. It is similar to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, but affects the ankles and feet.
It can cause numbness, burning, and tingling that goes down the side of the ankle into the bottom of the foot and the toes. It can be diagnosed primarily through physical examination and confirmed through electrical testing or imaging such as a CT scan, or MRI to rule out a space occupying mass compressing the nerve.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome can be treated conservatively with custom foot orthotics, injections, and anti-inflammatory medication. If conservative treatment fails, the gold standard, is surgical decompression. The award winning, expert podiatrists at Advanced Podiatry of Manhasset, Huntington, Coram, Plainview, Mineola, Williston Park & Maspeth are proficient in both the conservative and surgical treatment of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome and on the cutting edge of minimally invasive surgical techniques for its treatment.
