Whether or not your life is out of balance because of COVID-19, bunions are a pain!!!
They are caused by genetic predisposition‘s, foot deformities, and injuries, and occur when the big toe joint moves out of alignment, creating that characteristic bump.
The first metatarsal deviates outward and the big toe deviates inward, and you have this malpositioned joint. This can result in inflammation and discomfort while walking, due to the change in the shape of the foot.
Despite popular misconception, bunions are not caused by high heels, or improper footwear, but they certainly can worsen a pre-existing bunion, or make those genetically predisposed more susceptible.
Think of it like the framework in your car: the car's axle might be shifted a little bit. You can have a front end car alignment problem, and it still functions to get you from point "A" to point "B", but depending on how you take care of it, you will still have to get it fixed.
The long-term fix to painful bunions is surgical correction. Conservatively, you can wear wide shoes, or soft pads and accommodate it. We can measure you for Custom Foot Orthotics to try to slow it down, and we can give injections if there is inflammation.
Bunions should be addressed early. You should get a baseline set of x-rays, so you know exactly what your deformity is and how you may, or may not treat it at that time. Bunions may, or may not progress, but the younger you are, the easier the fix and the better the correction you can get. As you get older, your options change and your joints may become more arthritic, which changes your options as well.
At the first sign of a bunion, even if it is not painful, it would be prudent to have it evaluated by one of our expert podiatrists at Advanced Podiatry of Manhasset, Huntington, Plainview, or Maspeth.
