Fungal Toenails

Fungal toenails is the most common cause for discolored, thick and misshapen toenails. The nails become weak and brittle, and often tend to pull apart from the nail bed. The fungus that infects the toenail is usually the same fungus that causes athletes foot.

Initially, the infection occurs when fungus penetrates the nail, which is most commonly through a crack from injury or dry nails. After it reaches the nail bed, the fungus spreads over the entire nail. At the earliest stage, the change is purely cosmetic, and presents as white or yellow spots underneath the nail.

The biggest mistake people make is to ignore the infection in this early stage, because it will usually worsens. Since fungus is infectious, it can spread quickly from one spot to another, or to other nails, people, and even other parts of the body. Nail fungus infections often spread to the skin of the foot, causing athlete’s foot, and can even spread to the genitals to cause jock itch!

The final stage of nail fungus is the most evident and the one that patients can simply no longer ignore. Many times the nail may even begin to partially detach from the nail bed, and you may notice a foul odor as well. Patients also complain of pain in their nails.

The best thing you can do is to treat your infection early on to prevent further worsening.

Treatment for toenail fungus can be fast, effective, and pain free with laser technology, PinPointe FootLaser. With the PinPointe Laser, toenail fungus is treated safely and quickly with no anesthesia needed. The laser is designed to penetrate through the nail and kill the fungus on the nail bed using heat damage. The fungus is targeted and eradicated without damaging the surrounding skin.

Toenail fungus treatment with the PinPointe FootLaser typically requires only 1 session. After the treatment, the nail should grow back healthy. New clear and fungus free nail will grow and replace the nail that was damaged by the fungus.

Fungal nail infections should be treated right away. Toenail fungus is not self limiting. If it is left untreated, the infection can only get worse and spread. Once you see symptoms like discoloration, have it checked out right away with a podiatrist.
