Infected Ingrown Toenail

                           infected ingrown toenails

We have all had one at some point, and we all try to avoid them like the plague, but it happens. Ingrown nails are a painful nuisance that can really be quite annoying.  However, if that ingrown nail becomes infected a more serious issue can arise.

If you have pain and tenderness to the edge of your toe it could certainly be from an ingrown nail.  If you start to see drainage, redness, swelling and or pus you now have an infection.  This usually requires intervention from your doctor.

As you can see in this photo the nail borders become inflamed, collections of pus can develop and pain will start to increase.  In severe cases one might feel nausea, vomiting, fever and chills.  If you have any of these symptoms you should consult a doctor immediately.

One of our board-certified doctors can help remove the incurvated portion of the nail, drain the pus and help give you instructions for home care.  In some instances these infections could require oral antibiotics for treatment as well.

Ingrown nails can often become a chronic issue from some patients. In these instances ther eare more permanent options to alleviate the problem.  If you are concerned or have had this in the past give us a call today.  We can discuss you options, give you a thorough evaluation and help you prevent future issues.
