The Achilles Tendon is the largest and strongest tendon in the body. It anchors the calf muscles to the heel bone – which subjects it to very high forces. Achilles Tendon problems are very common, especially among middle aged weekend warriors who don’t exercise regularly.
Achilles Tendon injuries may seem to happen suddenly, but they usually result from tiny tears that happen over time. These chronic, or long-term injuries to the tendon micro structure, such as Achilles tendinitis, or Achilles tendonosis, often result from overuse and sudden increase in the amount of, or the intensity of physical activity, as well as from wearing high-heeled shoes and individuals with extreme high arch or flat feet.
Symptoms of these types of injuries include lingering pain, or swelling and should not be ignored as these symptoms may be an early warning that you are at risk of a more traumatic injury, such as an Achilles Tendon rupture.
Minor Achilles Tendon discomfort can be treated with rest, anti-inflammatory medication, stretching, moist heat, EPAT [Shock Wave], and custom foot orthotics.
